I hate podcasts. I can read in five minutes what takes 30-45 minutes to listen to. Can you give me the option to read it?
I’m with you. I’ve never listened to a podcast in my life.
Right, I’m also 100% in favor of having this option. If I absolutely must use a podcast, when possible I always set the speed to X2 and listen to it in duck language.
Some podcasts are meant to be entertaining, not just informative.
Gents –
I’m sorry that you don’t like podcasts. Kind of makes me wonder how you found it.
But there are reasons for listening to a story rather than reading it. For instance, if you’re driving in your car and multi-tasking – i.e. reading a book and driving at the same time – won’t work. Or perhaps you’re mowing the lawn. Or maybe even taking a walk. Each of these examples have been mentioned to me over the course of the episodes I’ve produced (121 episodes of ILAFFT and now 10 of The Reider Report).
It was my choice to not put a transcript of the podcast on the Avbrief.com web site (I don’t know what other sites do) because there is no attribution to who is saying what and more importantly, because of the errors can occur in the speech-to-text conversion.
It’s interesting to me that there are folks who prefer to “watch” podcasts on YouTube, even though there are only talking heads – and in our case, there is only a still picture of my guest and me. Like you don’t get the value of a podcast, I don’t get why people need – or want – to “watch” a conversation that visuals don’t enhance.
I wish you well in your quests to find printed materials that will entertain and inform you. I just am not in the business of transcribing, writing, and editing a conversation for print or e-book formats. I spend a great deal of time as it is to hopefully allow my guests to tell their stories and offer lessons that can benefit pilots.
As I’ve said (and I have no idea who said it first), “A wise person learns from experience. A wiser person learns from the experience of others.”
I have friends who dislike e-readers – they prefer to hold a physical book in their hands. I’m not in that camp. To have a massive amount of reading – or listening material – in a small package is great for me. And I think of listening to music – I can’t imagine having to carry around a bunch of vinyl records or 8-tracks or cassettes or CDs or even open reel tapes (remember those?) when I can have my music library on a music player as mp3s or even un-compressed .wav files.
Thanks for your comments and I hope you can fight your hatred of podcasts and hear some good stories – and maybe learn some valuable flight lessons as well.
