Viasat Wants To Change Broadband Performance Metrics

Satellite services company Viasat wants to change the way that in-flight internet performance is judged. The company says speed alone is an unreliable metric to assess the quality of passengers’ online experience. AvBrief spoke with Viasat’s Claudio D’Amico about a fresh look at the subject.

Hi Russ. Thanks so much for what you do.

Just wanted to say on podcasts/audio articles, that a brief, written summary would be appreciated as an option for those not wanting to listen.

Actual metrics used by internetworking professionals for decades are obfuscated and rewritten to justify the physical limitations of GEO satellite operators. Here you go Justin, there’s your summary.

The want to change the way it’s defined because Viasat has issues. I had them for home internet and despite paying for 75 Mbps I was often .5-4 Mbps even with clear skies. That’s not even including the awful latency. Upgraded to Starlink when I could and it’s massively better. No wonder Viasat wants different metrics.
