uAvionix has been advancing the interface for its AV-30 electronic flight display and the latest software release (version 3.2.0) adds compatibility between the AV-30 EHSI and the popular ForeFlight Mobile app. The way it works is you plan a route in the ForeFlight app, wirelessly send the flight plan into the AV-30’s electronic HSI as an active course, and when equipped, the interfaced autopilot can fly the active route.

The interface between the AV-30 and the ForeFlight app on an iPad requires the uAvionix AV-Link Wi-Fi bridge. That’s an external 15-pin DB dongle device that’s wired into the overall AV-30 interface and is mounted in series between the AV-30-C and the backshell connector. uAvionix designed the AV-Link for future interfaces and it does more than talk with an iPad running ForeFlight. Any portable ADS-B In receiver that works via the industry standard GDL90 Wi-Fi protocol (uAvionix builds and offers the ForeFlight Sentry portables) can interface with the display just as it’s done with an iPad, for ADS-B traffic symbology for example. That’s the AV-Link pictured here.
The 3.2.0 software is available for field upgrades at no cost (shop labor may be extra) and will initially be available for the AV-30-E (for experimental applications), with certified interfaces (AV-30-C) coming shortly.
