The Case of the Confounding Crosswind Component

With guest Randy Bolinger

How many times have we jumped in an airplane for a short flight without doing complete flight planning? Most of the time there are no consequences. But what would you do if you thought you’d done due diligence in your planning and something changed en route? Divert? Go back to where you started? Or was there another option? Host Rob Reider discusses this cautionary tale with pilot Randy Bolinger.

I can’t sit and listen to a podcast for 30+ minutes but I’d love to read a transcript.

Being in a flight school for a long time with responsibility for many students soloing, we had to be very careful about the student’s limitations not being exceeded, which were specified in their logbooks. The only way to do this was to use the current metar’s and taf’s and apply the numbers to all available runways before the flight. Bottom line, this doesn’t stop being important as experience and ratings accumulate. This was a great testimonial by an experienced pilot which should get a lot of attention.
