The Sporty’s PJ-series handheld VHF radio line has been a good seller mainly because of a fair selling price and a simple yet generous feature set. The latest PJ 2 GPS kicks the feature set up a few notches with a built-in WAAS GPS, a built-in intercom, and Bluetooth connectivity. Who would have ever have imagined, all that for four hundred bucks. Seriously. We’ve come a long way since Nancy Narco.
First handheld that I Had was a flying brick–a TERRA TPX 720- it was around 3 lbs.and 12 inches high and many a folk used it as a fixed radio in their homebuilt or J-3 Cub or Aeronca Chief/Champ as I did IN THE ’70’s.
Lot of nice features at a competitive price. The one exception, it lacks the capability to simultaneously monitor a second frequency. That will push me towards Yaseu or Icom.
I used an Icom for many years in an Aeronca Chief. With an external antenna it worked great, as good as a panel mount. It was an old model Icom though.
