Sporty’s Adds ForeFlight Interface to PJ2 GPS Radio

When we evaluated the Sporty’s PJ2 GPS in AvBrief’s Smart Aviator feature, we found it to be a good performer with a generous feature set and fair price. But we also contemplated how much utility its utilitarian onboard GPS might offer the typical user, who might already use a tablet app for navigating.

Now Sporty’s added a wireless interface between the radio and an iPad/iPhone running the ForeFlight app. The value there is when the iPad doesn’t have a reliable GPS source because you can use the PJ 2 GPS radio’s internal WAAS GPS to send it position data. The radio has Bluetooth, so connecting to ForeFlight is a matter of turning the Bluetooth on and selecting Output GPS Data for its data stream. Verify it’s connected by the GPS output icon (three flashing waves) at the top of the PJ2 GPS screen.

Sporty’s said to make sure the ForeFlight app is up to date before attempting connection, which should be ForeFlight’s release version 18.5 or later.

The PJ2 GPS is priced at $399, the PJ2+ remains in the Sporty’s radio lineup at $249.95, and there’s also the $249.95 L6 version, which has a built-in LEMO headset jack instead of standard GA mic and phone jacks.
