Sonex Shows How Structures Are Load-Tested

Sonex offered a glimpse of how it tests components of its kit with the release of a video on load testing the horizontal tail of the new Highwing. The company said the structure easily surpassed the load requirements of the structure as set out by ASTM and FAA standards. The successful test means the company can start getting tail kits ready for shipping. Those who have ordered will find out in November when they can get their own hands on one.

“Consistent with all Sonex aircraft tail structures, the Highwing tail performed well in-excess of the required loading and was tested to 150% of ultimate load (225% of design limit load) with no failure (breakage) or yielding (permanent deformation) of the structure or sample fuselage section,” Sonex said in a news release. “This feature of Sonex designs not only ensures structural capability of the tail in all flight regimes, but also eliminates concerns with moving the aircraft around by the tail in your hangar.”
