So Long AVweb, Hello AVBrief

As some of you may already know, I was fired by Firecrown Media as Editor-in-Chief of AVweb on July 31, ending a 21-year career with what I, and many of you, consider to be one of the most topical, influential and informational aviation news sources anywhere. When I answered a flurry of text and phone messages last Thursday, it was with the knowledge that AVweb was strong, well respected and meeting the daily challenges that all media face in this evolving world of content delivery.

We had just come off enormously successful AirVenture coverage, AVweb was among Firecrown’s most financially successful titles and all indicators were pointed in the right direction. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I was told my modest stipend for ensuring the beast was fed day in and day out was too much for the company’s budget and I was done, effective immediately. I was among three senior people let go on Thursday and Friday of last week.

I get it. Things change, goalposts move.

Except some developments over the past few months have given me cause for concern about AVweb’s continued role in the industry it has so passionately and vigorously covered, criticized and celebrated over the last 30 years. With these new developments, the process of creating the daily flow of news, videos, opinion and features has been disrupted and may be for some time. I believe this morning’s edition of AVweb Flash, the first since my departure, illustrates my point perfectly. By all means have a look for yourself.

There’s no magic to this work. Journalists all over the world do the same basic thing day in and day out, but an aviation publication benefits greatly by having editors and writers who are pilots or have other relevant aviation experience. In my mind, it’s crucial that those creating the content have that expert knowledge and experience to inform their writing.

I could go into great detail about what I think is going to happen to AVweb but I will leave it at this. It is going to fundamentally change and I don’t think it will continue to serve the audience and industry that it has for more than three decades. In my mind, that creates a void in the market and is the business justification for starting this new publication.

As new publications go, it will not be especially groundbreaking. AVBrief (good name, eh?) will look a lot like what AVweb has looked like and will never, ever use artificial intelligence to create articles, commentary or news items served to readers. Their actual intelligence would be terribly insulted by the error-riddled examples of AI editorial attempts I’ve reviewed. Firecrown is embracing AI as a productivity tool and cost-saving device to the point where AI competitions and indoctrination sessions have been held for staff. Quotas have been set for using AI as a fundamental content producer. A couple of weeks ago, one staff member was publicly recognized for being the first to reach 100 AI “projects” in his work.

Again, and I can’t stress it enough, AVBrief will never let AI write a story, do a product review or formulate opinions on the myriad issues facing this industry. It is really terrible at it.

So far, it’s just me, a wonderful IT guy who also happens to be pilot and some other volunteers who have put this inaugural edition of AVBrief together in the last three days. If you think there’s a place for a continuation of the traditional AVweb type of publication, please, please, please sign up for a free (always will be) subscription to AVBrief. This AVBrief Update is only going out to a few hundred people and we need thousands of subscriptions to ensure advertisers can spread their message to a receptive audience. Many potential advertisers are getting this first newsletter. If you have ideas on launching this new publication, please email me at russ@avbrief.com with any thoughts.

The great thing about AVweb was that our advertisers were also our readers and they knew the value it brought to the thousands of people who, like one of the pilots of that beautiful Constellation at AirVenture, started every day by catching up on the latest aviation news with us. We were gratified by the many people who approached us at the show to tell us how much they appreciated our efforts and to encourage us to carry on.

The Smart Aviator

So we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here. We’re just trying to keep doing what we’ve always done but under a slightly different banner. Every issue will have a “News” section where we’ll tell you about regulatory stuff, new airplanes, crashes and the normal mix of aviation-centric news that we hear about and investigate every day. We will also have a “Smart Aviator” section where we’ll tell you about new products, do flight reviews and generally keep abreast of the best practices for maintenance and airmanship. You will find it very familiar.

To get this thing launched, we will need help but it’s pretty straightforward. The most important thing is to please sign up to receive the AVBrief Update Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (we will take it daily when demand warrants) and tell everyone you know in aviation about us. As we build momentum, we’ll keep you posted on our progress and try not to pester you too much with promotions and offers. We’ll have to do some of that but we don’t need to clog your inbox.

AVBrief will rely on advertising revenue to continue bringing the news to our readers, but our coverage will never be influenced by the finances. Advertisers who have dealt with AVweb in the past can expect the same kind of environment going forward with AVBrief.

The media landscape is changing rapidly, but some basics remain unshakable, especially for participants in specialized fields like aviation. You need a reliable, credible, unbiased and accurate source for information about flying safely and as economically as possible. Our pledge to you is to be that source.

Thank you very much.

Good to have you here Russ and away from Firecrown

Firecrown destroyed both IFR Magazine and Aviation Safety, and I now have a several years long subscription to Flying I do not want (I get the articles in Apple News anyway, although with the overlap of AOPA magazine I see no need to have both of the magazines, except when AOPA needs to be criticized.)

I just saw the headset AI generated “article” posted over on Reddit as an example of the new AI writing style, it’s pretty bad.

I am looking forward to AVBrief.

I’m forty plus years into a career in aviation/aerospace manufacturing for companies you are well familiar with. Also worked in the 145 side of the biz. While not a pilot I devour aviation content like a kid devours candy. One morning I woke up and you were gone. Replaced by “kids” with moral ties to aviation. Reading articles that, frankly, embarrassed me. I searched the web and found you again. Whew. I thought it was over. Bonne chance Russ and AvBrief. I feel I’m home again!

Done, and followed Avbrief on Facebook as well, if that helps. (I couldn’t get the YouTube link to work, and I don’t have x/twitter or Instagram.)

Russ:

I can genuinely say I feel your pain, having been fired from Flying by the same fellow. That poor magazine is a shadow of its former self, as are most of the other magazines. The day is coming when said fellow – initials CF – won’t be able to find any journalists willing to work for him. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Good luck, Russ.

Unsubscribed from all Flying-related pubs. Let’s see what some smaller operators and independents such as yourself can come up with and fill in the gaps for content previously under Flying’s thumb.

Russ, I wish you very well with your new endeavor. I signed up immediately when I heard about it. When I heard about AVweb and Aviation Consumer getting gobbled up by this outfit, I was worried what the future would bring, and I guess that future is here. I’m glad that you’ve decided to carry the banner for actual journalism.

Russ, just signed up, the new site looks great, good luck! One suggestion, think about setting up a way for individuals like me to voluntarily support you via monthly subscription. (Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, etc). I already do this for a few other independents that I believe in, and would be happy to do the same for you.

I second that. Keeping the site free doesn’t preclude offering a way for people who value the work to make donations.

I was going to write a long rambling note like the kind AI would reject, but instead I’ll just say sorry this happened and that the AI produced garbage has been increasingly apparent in their publications. (I printed out a piece from a Firecrown publication that was supposedly about a project I worked on that had little resemblance to it and brought it to the booth at AirVenture with six major corrections noted in its two pages and asked them to pass it along to the author along with how disappointed I was in the lack of basic accuracy.) I subscribe to a bunch of aviation publications and read them all cover to cover to keep informed, but it looks like I’ll be thinning out the ranks even more now once a subscription or two runs out. We’re glad you’re here and look forward to supporting you.

Russ,

Long time listener, first time caller. I’m sorry that you had to go through this, but glad that I found you and your new home. Just subscribed here and un-subbed “over there”. Thanks to JJB for the heads-up post “over there” that got me over here. Glad to see some of the regulars like JJB and Raf in the comments to let me know that I’m in the right place.

Best of luck in this new venture. I’m tuned in and excited for the future.

Yay! Thank you, Russ. Just started this subscription and ended the other one and will never return. I wonder how long it will take Firecrown to destroy Aviation Safety and Aviation Consumer.

Nothing more ‘First-Thing-In-the-Morning’ to me then drinking coffee and reading the electronic Aviation newspapers. I’m already enjoying the first day of AvBrief. Can’t wait to see who else signs on to AvBrief to report the real world of Aviation.

I believe that the new Sport Aviation and the Aircraft that come from it is a game changer. Robot reporting the news has it’s place, It will get the new Sport Pilot 2.0 developments out into the social media space and push the new up and coming Pilots into getting started. Independent news sources that allow commenting are by far the best most relevant, accurate and enjoyable read. The down side is independents just don’t get the coverage. Face it, Firecrown articles are going to get top of the list in the Google, yahoo, bing, facebook, X, reddit and everywhere else. Which is good, it makes more pilots. Once the pilot prospect becomes a Pilot, then we’ll get the word out to them (word-of-mouth) about the best place for Aviation News 🙂

Thanks, Russ

I was probably one of the earliest subscribers to the original AVweb, back when Mike Busch had started it. Lately I couldn’t even get the newsletters delivered to my email box, or comment. Eventually I just gave up, and to be honest I haven’t really missed it.

I’ve subscribed to AVbrief and hope it retains the quality and spirit of the original AVweb.

I am disgusted with what is happening to aviation journalism. We have one man who has bought almost every aviation periodical there is. He owns Flying, Kit planes, Aviation Consumer and abolished Aviation Safety. Now when I read Flying I find the same article I just read in Aviation Consumer. The only way I can show my displeasure is by not renewing my subscriptions to any of his publications and I was a subscriber to all of them.

The present ownership by one company (Firecrown Media) of the large majority of consumer aviation publications outside of the association magazines is a very sad development. Firecrown says on its website that its business plan is “turning content into commerce.” The principal, Craig Fuller (same name, but not the past AOPA president) apparently made a lot of money in the trucking industry (possibly on the media side), on the same business plan – editorial content should be geared to getting the reader to buy something from companies that advertise, or, as is often the case with Firecrown, from Firecrown itself.

Apologies for getting on my soapbox, but this fries my hide. I was an aviation journalist in the 1980s, and keeping a “Chinese Wall” between the editorial and advertising sales sides was always a top priority (at least on the editorial side) for maintaining credibility. Not that there wasn’t occasional “advertorial,” but the dominant theme, from my perspective, was safety awareness and education, which, of course, did involve a certain amount of talking about particular products. So we need to support the remaining independents, like Russ, and ignore the Firecrown publications. Hopefully they’ll get devalued enough that Firecrown will be forced to have a fire sale, and sell them off to responsible aviation publishers.

Russ, congratulations on the new venture and for being freed from Fireclown, even if it was involuntary. I hope something similar is in the works to save KITPLANES Magazine, or at least a digital reincarnation if not in-print. As an advertiser with KITPLANES, I have a hard time stomaching the task of paying Firecrown’s invoices when I know they aren’t paying KITPLANES editors and contributors on-time.

Russ, I rarely posted on Avweb but I have to post here! I noticed different authors this week and started wondering wth??? When I seen they started on 8/1 I realized what happened and it felt like I’d lost close friends! But now I know where to find you. I immediately signed up. Are you bringing anyone else with you? Maybe Mr Garrison? Or Amelia or Mark? Good luck!! I’m glad you didn’t throw in the towel.

Just found out about this today. AvWeb is dead, long live AvBrief!

I hope a certain media company soon finds out that the people who matter don’t want AI slop and will follow good writers to wherever they go. I also just found out that Aviation Consumer is going all-digital, which means it will probably soon also suddenly disappear. I’m tempted to just cancel my subscription now, but I want to support the remaining staff there as long as I can. At least until they too find refuge somewhere else…

Kudos to you Russ for taking the bold step of starting this venture from scratch. For some time I have lamented the demise of AvWeb, but could never hit the unsubscribe button out of a possibly misguided, 3 decade long sense of loyalty combined with no knowledge of where else to turn. Here’s to avbrief’s picking up the mantle and legacy of what was and carrying it forward to this generation and beyond. May you have unmitigated success.

Just found out about this on BeechTalk this AM.

After 27 years of reading AvWeb daily with my morning coffee, I am done. I noticed immediately the writing this week had changed. I assumed it was Firecrown forcing the junk articles on headsets and handhelds because a large retailer like Sporty’s or Aircraft Spruce somehow was funding it, since it didn’t really promote one over the other, and had no usable content. Now it makes sense that it was AI written.

I understand AI is not going away. One of my friends edits a trade magazine and has to use it, as does his writers, but he uses it for information and sometimes as an organizer, but has to do a lot of editing to make it real/human.

Thank you so much Russ. I’ve been an AvWeb kinda guy for about 27 years. Had it highlighted on my FAA computer once I became a staff/manager type person. I’ve been an aviator for about 60 years. Was heartbroken when it looked like AvWeb was now a such unexpected thing of my past. Bless you! I’m now so excited. My next project is to immediately sign up for Av Brief.
