A sixth person has been found dead following the crash of a Mexican military King Air 350 last Monday near Galveston, Texas. The plane, with four military members and four civilians, crashed into Galveston Bay in heavy fog. Among the dead was a two-year-old boy who was being flown to Galveston for treatment of severe burns. His mother was among the survivors. Volunteers performed the initial rescue of the two survivors possibly because it was initially thought the plane had landed safely. The aircraft came down a mile short of Runway 14 and just to the right of the extended centerline.

The Mexican Navy was operating the flight on behalf of a Mexican nonprofit that helps get severely burned children to specialized medical care, often in the U.S. Identities of the aircraft occupants have not been released. Initially only five fatalities were confirmed but a sixth victim was found sometime later. The aircraft was a Beechcraft B300 King Air 350i and it had flown from Mérida-Rejon Airport on the Yucatan Peninsula.

What an horrific ordeal for this poor mother and her family.

I’m so sorry to hear about the crash. They were so close to safety. Maybe spatial disorientation, pilot error, fatigue, fuel. We have yet to learn. Lives snuffed out, especially a youngster. Aviation is utterly unforgiving of carelessness, incapacity or neglect. A prayer for all aboard who were just trying to save a young life. RIP.
