One of the main runways at LaGuardia Airport could reopen Friday after a sinkhole next to it prompted an emergency closure on Wednesday. The sinkhole was discovered adjacent to Runway 4/22 in the late morning on Wednesday and the subsequent closure prompted numerous cancellations and delays. Crews worked around the clock on Thursday to excavate and then refill and repave the unstable ground. It is hoped the runway will reopen before flights begin on Friday at 6 a.m. Operations shut down from midnight to 6 a.m. so New Yorkers can get some sleep.
Thunderstorms late Wednesday added to the misery at LaGuardia. On Thursday 44% of outgoing and 53% of incoming flights were delayed, according to FlightAware. Authorities had originally thought the repairs would be finished by noon on Thursday, but crews were still working on it late Thursday night.
