Shotgun Drone Defense In Ukraine

Ukraine is reinventing modern warfare and using a Yak 52 to address one of its most pressing issues. The Ukrainian air force is using the 70-year-old trainer to carry a gunner in search of incoming Russian drones. The Yak can match the speed of the Iranian-built Shahed drones, which have been one of Russia’s most effective long-range weapons. But the Ukrainian response is a virtual turkey shoot with the gunner using a conventional shotgun to dispatch the explosives-laden remotely piloted aircraft.

Give soldiers a modern over/under. Machine gun over a shotgun.

If it wasn’t so serious, that looks like a lot of fun. Good hunting boys!

Got to point out that in the photo the gunner is holding a modern AR based rifle not a shotgun. With the speeds and distances involved I doubt an actual shotgun would be very effective in many situations. I would think an early B or C90 King Air with the turbine upgrade and skydiver roll up door would also be a very effective platform for this even if you could only attack targets on the left.

There are plenty of AR based shotguns. 3” shells with 00 Buck will carry the distance and do the job. I like your idea of the King Air jump ship.

I’m told that the early spy plane biplanes once met with nothing at all until one pulled out a pistol to shoot at the other. I would expect that these drones of modern times will soon have the ability to shoot back.

Not buying the video, sorry…although the tactic may very well work

I’ve got the 12 Ga.drone killer shells that are ground based and deploy a whirling projectile.
