Safely Remove Click Bond Fasteners

Heat gun with nozzle adapter.

Click Bond offers a huge variety of bondable fastener solutions—nut plates, male/female studs, cable tie standoffs, reinforcement bushings, etc. And there comes a time when you may need to remove one.

The trick is to heat the Click Bond fastener and the underlying adhesive without damaging the panel to which it is bonded. A small, variable-temp heat gun used for soldering works well. Adjust the heat so that the Click Bond peels off within 15 to 20 seconds. I use an adapter on the gun to concentrate the air jet onto the Click Bond fastener itself. For studs, point the heat at the base of the stud. Grab the post with pliers, or a female threaded tube, and apply steady pressure to the fastener while heating it—the stud should peel off within about 15 seconds.

For composite nut plates, I grab one of the edges and peel up. Avoid applying heat to the panel itself.

I’ve found The Flight Shop to offer a good selection of Click Bond products.
