A plume of volcanic ash from Mt. Sheveluch, on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, is spreading potentially damaging grit in a 100-mile band transiting northeast through a significant area of Washington State and southeast British Columbia. The dirty air is between 20,000 and 36,000 feet. The ash reached the coast of Washington on Saturday and is moving at about 90 knots, but it’s not clear how long it will continue to take its current course. The National Weather Service issued the following advisory earlier this week: “VOLCANIC ASH BTN FL200 AND FL360 FROM MT SHEVELUCH. MOV NE 90KT.”
Mt. Sheveluch is the most northerly active volcano in Asia and sees frequent small eruptions, but last week there was an explosion that took out the lava cap and sent ash more than 35,000 feet high. That ash was picked up by active weather systems tracking from Hawaii to North America, and that pattern is expected to continue for a day or two. The plume is faintly visible from satellite imagery. A frontal system tracking from the northwest is likely to push it out of the way early in the week.
Somehow, this has got to be Donald Trump’s fault.

People are saying valcanos (not the little-known Russian suppositories) the world over were so enthralled yet intimidated by him humiliating Lassen Peak at 85, that these eruptions will continue in paying respect until every last valcano spews its load of ash, effecting all below…

In my Air Force days, I was an on-duty engineer at a site that monitored our missile early warning satellites. These operated in the infrared, and we could see the heat from the volcanoes bubbling away on the Kamchatka peninsula.
