Former AOPA CEO Darren Pleasance says he doesn’t want his old job back but he’ll be looking for another role where he can “contribute to GA.” In a video released Friday, Pleasance said he’s encouraged by the direction AOPA is headed after controversy erupted over his dismissal in early February. He particularly said he’s pleased with the selection of Trustee Luke Wippler as the new chairman and felt it best to “give the organization space, let Luke and the broader leadership team take this moment in time to chart the next chapter for AOPA.”
Pleasance said he has not gone through the proposed bylaw changes in detail but in general likes what he sees, particularly that the changes are presented as proposals and “are not a done deal” pending consideration of member input. He encouraged fellow members to provide that input and to give AOPA time to properly consider the comments and get the changes right. He did suggest that members be allowed to participate in future AOPA board annual meetings virtually. The next meeting is May 12 and only members who are present will be able to address the board.

I believe the best way to advance general aviation is to create a competitive organization. I believe organizations like GOA are helping make NRA stronger after they went off the rails. AOPA is clearly off the rails and needs some competition to get them back on track and keep them there. That may be a bigger challenge than you want to take on, but I am hoping someone with the skills to do so will offer the competition AOPA so desperately needs.

It certainly seems like continued dilution/splintering will weaken political efficacy.
