Somali airline Starsky Aviation is hailing its crew’s actions after all 55 people walked away from a runway overrun that ended up in the surf. The crew of the Fokker 50 reported a technical issue on takeoff from Mogadishu on Tuesday morning and returned to the airport. They touched down on the runway but went off the end and came to rest in inches-deep water. There were no serious injuries among the 50 passengers and five crew, but the airplane was totaled. The aircraft was on its way to Puntland. Social media posts show passengers walking calmly away from the broken airplane. The nature of the technical fault has not been released.

The airline singled out the captain for credit in the safe outcome. “The pilot’s swift and calm decision-making played a decisive role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board, and we commend him for how he handled the situation,” said airline spokesman Hassan Mohamed Aden. The airline and the Somali authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
