More than 2,800 flights to and from the Middle East were canceled on Sunday as Iran targeted major airports in retaliation for attacks by the U.S. and Israel that killed their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other Iranian leaders on Saturday. Hundreds of thousands of travelers are stranded, likely for the next several days, as most airlines have stopped flying to the area. Many of the airports are in countries not directly involved in the conflict, including business and tourism destinations like Dubai and Bahrain.
According to FlightAware, Dubai International bore the brunt of the cancellations with more than 90% of outgoing and incoming flights canceled. Among airlines serving the region, Emirates had the most cancellations with 92% of its schedule eliminated. The military activity is continuing amid reports about the possibility of talks between Iran’s new leaders and negotiators for the U.S. and Israel. Delays and cancellations have already been set for Monday and Tuesday by most of the major carriers to the region.
