Low-Budget Carbon Monoxide Detector: CO-Pocket

Always on the lookout for inexpensive safety gear, Smart Aviator magazine has been flying with the CO-Pocket digital carbon monoxide detector made by Kansas-based Radiant Technology. Priced at $79.95, the non-TSO self-contained sensor and display is aimed at light sport and experimental aircraft applications. We found the unit worked as advertised and was easy to get along with. In this video we look at the feature set.

Note that this is only good to 10kft according to the specifications on their website.

I’ve had a sensorcon one for five years now- well past its official recalibration period so I actually just purchased one of these.

I not only consider it essential safety gear but it’s an engine instrument as well- both times I’ve had a crack in the exhaust the leading indicator was an elevated CO.

We used a handheld, highly sensitive CO detector during a final run and acceptance check of every aircraft subject to an annual inspection or major repair. The results were noted in the logbook entry. It’s an excellent way to quantify the integrity of exhaust systems and the influence on cabin air systems.
