Current Garmin navigators and flight displays log generous amounts of flight data, and you can pore over it all—engine data, approach performance, track data, CO levels—through Garmin’s flyGarmin.com interface. But the process of sharing it with data analysis programs is confusing to some who might be missing out on analyzing flight and engine data because they don’t know how to work with the stored files. Installers might not fully grasp the interface, either, and might not be much help in educating new users.
Users of Garmin’s G3X now have an expanded and simplified interface with automatic flight log uploading. Similar to Garmin’s FlightStream and GDL 60 PlaneSync wireless hub that shuffles flight data from Garmin panel avionics (GTN navigators and GI 275 flight instruments), the G3X Touch’s data logging function has been streamlined to automatically send the data to Garmin’s Connext cloud service after every flight, using the Garmin Pilot app as a wireless hub. It saves a few steps that were required previously on the G3X Touch.
Consider there are basically two ways to extract logged data from the G3X Touch display. The old way (or the way you do it if you don’t have the Garmin Pilot app) is by manually offloading the data from an SD card that was inserted in the display’s card slot while you went flying. You must remember to yank the card from the unit and take it to a computer to manually upload its data to flyGarmin. Plus, doing it this way doesn’t allow for a time saver in what Garmin calls auto analysis with its third-party partner brands. This includes FlySto, Savvy Aviation, Crew Chief Systems, Navi AI, and Brazos Safety Systems, which prepare reports and flight playback graphics.
Now the G3x Touch automatically offloads the data to the Garmin Pilot app where it’s sent to your specified third-party analysis services after every flight. All of the data analysis integration is still managed through flyGarmin, but we like that you can automatically select which third-party analysis program it goes to, and like even more that it’s finally available for the G3X Touch without having to buy any other hardware, and without having to remember to pull the data card from the unit to grab the flight log. Do remember to keep the G3X Touch operating software up to date.

For nonusers or those who don’t know how to work with the stored files, what do those services do? Would your selection of a particular one depend on what you wanted to know? Do they charge? How do you link your data to them? And what about the population of Foreflight users – do they need to know anything beyond “download with an SD card”?

This is why we provided links to these third-party programs. Savvy sifts through engine data, while Flysto looks at flight profile and a lot more. ForeFlight (or any other non-Garmin app…ForeFlight isn’t the only one) users need to run Garmin Pilot if they want the stored data to automatically populate to third-party programs. Otherwise, pull the data card from the G3X and manually send the logs to your preferred program.
