Cockpit EFB Apps: How You Might Shop

The full-featured, well-respected ForeFlight Mobile iPad app has been in the spotlight lately with some loyal users pondering other options—of which there are plenty. But switching apps (and taking the plunge to an EFB if you’ve never used a tablet app in flight) can be a major, difficult decision. As Smart Aviator on AvBrief ventures on an in-depth aviation tablet app review, we sat down with John Zimmerman at Sporty’s for some guidance on how you might start the shopping process, which includes considering how you fly while taking advantage of a program’s free trial.

Others with extensive glass panels can comment, but I’m thinking the ease of use of tablet apps compared to panel systems is the top reason. The layers and menus in panel systems is just incredible. Then, you don’t want to mess up what you have already set up fumbling through menus and choices. Plus, it’s easier to have the tablet in your lap and research while flying than touching just the right place with sausage fingers on the panel screen especially in turbulent conditions.

Feeling betrayed by Foreflight right now. My problem is the sunk costs I have in hour upon hour of training and educating myself to use FF without confusion or having it become a cockpit distraction.
