Canada has suspended the federal excise tax on both Jet A and 100LL until at least Sept. 7 in response to the sharp crude oil price increases of late. The tax on Jet A is normally four cents (CAD) a liter and avgas is about 11 cents a liter. The cuts also include automotive fuels, and the five-month tax holiday is expected to cost the government about $2.4 billion (CAD) or about $1.75 billion USD. The government said in a statement the move “is a responsible measure that will reduce operating costs for truckers and businesses in the food, agriculture, housing, construction and delivery sectors.”
The measure was the government’s first act after the ruling Liberal Party won seats in Parliament in three by-elections on Monday, securing a majority in the House of Commons. The wins mean the Liberals, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, now hold more seats than all of the other parties and independents in Parliament combined, making it much easier for them to pass legislation.

Wow. Gas is $2.71 a liter they charge a 14% HST on every purchase and what a dime per liter? Wow that’s mighty white of those takers.

Our double left-handers (politicians) in Germany just passed similar measures on automotive and trucking fuel. Idiotically shortsighted move. Savings at the pump estimated to run around .17cents (Euro) per liter and from what I hear – this only works if the industry hands the “rebate” forward to the customers. While politicians assume the best, average Joe is already laughing.
We only have two months of planned “savings” upon which people will have heart attacks at the pump.
Currently a liter Diesel sells for 225.9 cents, down from 251.9 cents around Easter. Thats roughly $ 8.85/ Gallon.
I have not heard about AVgas or Jet-A1 being subsidised. At least on lead containing AVgas this would spell IDIOCY ^15.
