Camarillo, California-based Avex Aviation has coordinated with a group of Daher TBM-series pilots to launch the TBM Proficient Pilot Program (TBM-PPP) to promote safety and proficiency for operators of Daher’s pressurized, single-engine turboprops. According to Avex, the effort is designed “for pilots who are already skilled and want to keep improving through data, discipline, and collaboration.” TBM-PPP identifies itself as a group of “Safety Passionate Pilots” committed to learning and flying safely.
The program uses automated flight-data analysis, compliance scoring, and real-time feedback to help pilots conform their flying with Daher’s pilot operating handbook as well as FIL standards. Only pilots who meet the group’s “commitment to excellence” are accepted, and the program is recognized by insurers, brokers, and training providers.
TBM-PPP said, “We are seeking to provide data to insurers that supports identifying this group for consideration for policies for older pilots, larger liability coverage, and broader geographic coverage. This is measured by maintaining a Stabilized Approach Criterion of greater than 80% as an indication of safe operation. Members must also adopt the agreed SOP & SMS [standard operation procedures and safety management system] as their own.”
Also part of the TBM-PPP are “Safety Buddies” and “Mentors.” Safety Buddies are TBM-PPP members in good standing who make themselves available to discuss individual flights privately. Mentors are TBM instructors and are also available to members to discuss individual flights in private. They are sent a flight report for every member flight when the assessment score is less than 80%. Mentors may also initiate post-flight reviews, and TBM-PPP members may also contact Mentors for preflight discussions.
