2028 Olympics: The SoCal Airspace Squeeze Starts Early

SoCal TRACON (Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control, SCT) already works one of the busiest, most crowded airspace systems in the country. The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles (LA28) piles onto that, and the general aviation squeeze starts earlier than most people think.

Here is a yardstick. In 1984, Los Angeles sold about 5.7 million Olympic tickets, and the FAA was already publishing Olympic airspace restriction and NOTAM material nine days before the Opening Ceremony. LA28 expects far more visitors and events, so plan on Olympic-driven traffic and airspace friction showing up four to six weeks before Day 0, with the sharpest restrictions building in the last two weeks.

Big security events turn into rolling Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs). Some will be tied to specific venues and times. With venues spread all over the region, expect overlap and fast updates. Some days the map will look like a patchwork quilt.

Now add the low altitude slice. This is where patrol, medevac, news, tours, and training already live, and where arrivals and departures have to pass through. It is also where drones operate. Most small drones sit below 400 ft AGL. LA28 will pack more activity into the same band.

Air taxis are part of the plan. LA28 and Archer announced Archer as the official air taxi provider, using an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft called Midnight and a vertiport network tied to venues and airports. If it flies, it has to fit in the same low-altitude band.

Drones add another layer. Remote Identification (Remote ID) is required for most registered drones, but enforcement is uneven, and there are still plenty of “micro” drones out there that may not be registered and do not show up on the system. No Digital Flight Rules (DFR) will be in effect by then to automatically sequence drones out of everybody’s way, so expect tighter checks, more anti-drone teams and quicker takedowns, and more restrictions near venues and routes.

Another wildcard is BNATCS (Brand New Air Traffic Control System). The FAA is targeting completion by the end of 2028. LA28 is already designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE), meaning a federally run high-security operation. If SoCal facilities are still training and transitioning when the Games hit, expect extra friction: more metering, more vectors, more holds, and more “unable.”

Now put the calendar on it. The Olympics run July 14 to 30, 2028. The Paralympics run Aug. 15 to 27, 2028. Competition starts two days before each Opening Ceremony. That Day -2 start is real, but airspace constraints do not wait for it. 

The footprint is not just Los Angeles County. Venues spread from downtown and Inglewood to Long Beach, Pasadena, Anaheim, the San Fernando Valley, and surfing at Lower Trestles in San Clemente. Soccer preliminaries are still listed as multiple host cities to be determined, so the map can still grow.

So what is the practical GA picture? Not one giant ring around Los Angeles. It is a stack of smaller rings timed to events, plus VIP movement TFRs, plus drone restrictions, plus a possible eVTOL route layer, all laid over an already crowded SoCal chart.

Pilots may have to plan with more discipline. Check NOTAMs and TFRs thoroughly. Build alternates that keep you out of the basin. Do not count on last-minute shortcuts. Fly the radios clean and leave yourself slack. Use flight following when it is available. Or do not fly.

Here is what we have really got on the ramp today: a SoCal airspace where air taxis, tighter drone enforcement, security rings, BNATCS in transition, and legacy GA all try to coexist at once. Plan early. The squeeze will come whether you are ready or not, and the layers will start stacking up by late May 2028.

Sounds like a good time to do some hangar flying or be down for annual inspection!
Actually, this should be a good opportunity to see how well the eVTOL air taxi concept will work in the real world.

This misses the likelihood that many country’s athletes and fans will not be attending (ie Canada). Just too dangerous.

Adam, the quiet disruptor is visas..

The IOC is already flagging U.S. entry visa issues for LA28. Most countries will still send teams if today’s geopolitical climate holds. The Olympics normally draw athletes from all 206 National Olympic Committees.

The pickle is the public. Fans and families do not have handlers. Slow, unpredictable visas deter attendance without anyone admitting deterrence.

I question what hits harder, visa friction or enforcement optics?

If Newsom is the democratic canditate for ’28, GA and associated air traffic congestion will pale in comparison to the presence and actions of ICE and CBP federal involvement on the ground. Voting prep malfeasance and aggression will also be in high gear at that time.

Athletes and dignitaries from countries hated by the ‘person’ in the White House, all media but ‘selected’ outlets, and citizens with cell phone cameras should also begin preparing today for the event, as well as the GA pilots that Raf pointed out.

However…
It’s 38 months, 3 Super Bowls, 1 Winter Olympics, 84,500,000 heartbeats and 845+ potential breakfast/lunch flights away.
